Washington’s paid sick leave law allows an employee to accrue one hour of paid sick leave for every 40 hours worked to be used for one’s own illness, to care for a sick family member, if the workplace or place of care has been closed for health-related reasons, or for domestic violence. Beginning July 27, 2025, Washington’s paid sick leave law is expanded to allow an employee to use paid sick leave to prepare for, or participate in, any judicial or administrative immigration proceeding involving the employee or employee’s family member.
For absences exceeding three days, an employer may require verification that the use of paid sick leave is for an authorized purpose. Verification for this leave includes documentation from various professionals, such as advocates or attorneys, or the employee’s own written statement. The documentation or written statement must not disclose any personally identifiable information about the person’s immigration status or underlying immigration protection.
