Cook County, Illinois Revises Paid Leave Rules

Table of Contents

On April 10, 2025, the Cook County Board of Commissioners approved revisions to the regulations implementing the county’s paid leave ordinance. Below is a brief summary of the revised provisions.

As a reminder, the Paid Leave ordinance allows an employee to accrue one hour of paid leave for every 40 hours worked, up to 40 hours, to be used for any reason. See Cook County’s paid leave ordinance for additional information.

Accrual of Paid Leave and Additional Benefits When Using Paid Leave

Accrual is not required while an individual is using paid leave, however, if certain benefits are provided during paid leave, such as accrual, seniority, or health benefits, they must be the same as if the employee has been working.

Disciplinary Leave

The ordinance allows individuals to use available paid leave during disciplinary leave.

Payment of Paid Leave

Wages must be paid no later than the next regular payroll period beginning after the paid leave was used by the employee.
