2027 HR Compliance: Critical Deadlines to Know

2027 HR Compliance: Critical Deadlines to Know
Table of Contents

HR leaders have always balanced competing priorities, but compliance responsibilities continue to expand alongside workforce expectations, evolving regulations, and growing administrative demands. From benefits administration and payroll reporting to workplace policies and retirement plan oversight, employers face a steady stream of deadlines throughout the year.

As organizations prepare for 2027, several key compliance milestones deserve early attention.

Start the Year With Payroll and Tax Compliance in Mind

The first quarter of the year often brings one of the busiest compliance periods for employers. January and February include important payroll, tax, and employee reporting responsibilities, including Forms W-2, 1099, 940, 941, and more. Employers should also keep an eye on minimum wage changes that may take effect at the state or local level during the year.

This is also an ideal time to review workforce policies, employee handbooks, and compliance processes to confirm they reflect current workplace requirements and organizational priorities.

Prepare for Spring Reporting Deadlines

March and April bring several significant compliance obligations related to benefits and workforce reporting.

For many employers, ACA reporting deadlines remain a major focus area. Medicare Part D disclosures, Form M-1 filings, and electronic or paper ACA reporting deadlines may all require attention depending on plan design and organizational circumstances.

Spring can also serve as a checkpoint for evaluating performance management programs, reviewing workforce development initiatives, and assessing opportunities to improve operational efficiency through HR technology and automation.

Focus on Mid-Year Benefits and Workforce Planning

By summer, many organizations shift their attention toward benefits administration and workforce planning.

June brings Prescription Drug Data Collection (RxDC) reporting requirements for applicable plans, while July and August include several important retirement and benefits-related deadlines, including Summary of Material Modification distributions, Form 5500 filings, and PCORI fee requirements.

These compliance obligations often coincide with strategic planning activities. Employers may be reviewing benefits utilization, evaluating vendor performance, assessing employee engagement, and beginning preparations for annual renewals and open enrollment.

Don’t Overlook Fall and Year-End Requirements

The final months of the year include some of the most consequential compliance deadlines employers face.

September and October may involve Summary Annual Reports, Medical Loss Ratio rebate distributions, Medicare Part D Creditable Coverage Notices, and extended Form 5500 filing deadlines. Many organizations also begin compensation planning, workforce budgeting, and pay transparency reviews during this period.

As the calendar moves toward year-end, employers must prepare for automatic enrollment notices, participant disclosures, retirement plan compliance requirements, required minimum distributions, and other year-end obligations that can significantly impact benefits and retirement plan administration.

Stay Ahead of 2027 Compliance Requirements

Keeping track of compliance obligations throughout the year can be challenging, especially as regulations, reporting requirements, and workforce priorities continue to evolve.
