Q&A: Protect Your Talent Investment with Executive Benefits

Q&A: Protect Your Talent Investment with Executive Benefits

Amid talk of rising inflation, “quiet quitting,” and skyrocketing health care costs, the Great Resignation seems to have fallen off the radar. However, it is not over. In fact, executives have joined the Great Resignation in droves, prompting employers to seek creative ways to hold on to high-level talent.

One solution involves enhancing your executive benefits program. In this episode of BIZTips, we spoke with Anne Long, President, CBIZ Life Insurance Solutions, about the importance of executive benefits and the must-have executive perks employers should be offering in 2023.

Here are some highlights of our Q&A session:

1. Describe your role at CBIZ and get creative; throw in a metaphor if you can.

As the president of CBIZ Life Insurance Solutions, I sell umbrellas to people on sunny days. Say you leave home without an umbrella and it starts to rain. Once you've already gotten wet, there's no use in going back to get an umbrella. That's why it's better to be prepared, just in case. It's the same with life insurance. I help people be proactive about protecting the things that matter to them — their life, income, home, etc.

2. What’s one thing you’ve learned in your career that has surprised you the most?

The power of connections. I'm not talking about LinkedIn connections — I'm talking about the people you meet along the way and form human connections with. Once these connections are formed, oftentimes you're presented with opportunities to help each other out. There may be times where you offer help and there's nothing in it for you — you simply do it because it’s the right thing to do. When I get the chance to do this, I tell people to pay it forward. I think this opportunity to form connections, help others and expect nothing in return makes the experience of being a person in business a better one.

3. Amid everything going on in the world right now, the Great Resignation has fallen out of discourse. However, the numbers prove that it is still in full swing. Anne, can you give us some insight into why employees are still leaving their employers in droves?

I think the “why” behind the continuation of the Great Resignation comes down to the 4 Cs — COVID clarity, confidence, compensation and commute. The pandemic touched us all and inspired many to change careers. Employees are feeling more confident than ever that they can get another job and that they can secure higher compensation, too. And lastly, employers who are requiring employees to commute to the office are likely continuing to lose talent.

4. Are employers realizing that benefits are a great way to attract and retain employees amid the talent war?

So, my team and I recently analyzed a few studies that exemplify that, as a result of COVID, employees value life insurance, among various other nontraditional benefits, now more than ever. So, we’re seeing that employers want to differentiate their benefits packages to include life insurance and other offerings that maybe weren’t so popular before but can make a big difference in retention today.
