“April showers bring May flowers” is a proverb we often hear during the early part of spring. April provided investors with an experience akin to an unpleasantly rainy spring month as global markets moved broadly lower.

The first quarter of 2024 was a reminder of one of the most powerful drivers of equity markets: momentum. Throughout the quarter, a narrow leadership of the Magnificent Seven stocks broadened out to other areas of the S&P 500 Index, and even small cap stocks showed signs of optimism.

February was a month of unexpected surprises. In addition to the unseasonable warm days, we also saw an uptick in economic data ― but there were downside surprises as well. However, Wall Street does not always mirror Main Street, and financial markets continued to show strength into the second month of 2024.
