As a way to celebrate their 20th anniversary, CBIZ planned something pretty spectacular: A total of 20,000 hours of community service across all offices nationwide in their local communities. The Memphis office was excited about this challenge and opportunity and jumped right into the planning.

On August 25th, 60 volunteers headed out to Shelby Farms, a park with 4,500 acres of green space and 6.5 miles of urban trail located in the heart of Shelby County. The park recently reopened on September 1st after undergoing a massive transformation.

For our afternoon outside, we sprayed ourselves with bug spray, slipped our hands into work gloves, and headed out to the disc golf course to cut back and clear the overgrown brush.

After our hard labor, we proceeded to have a bit of fun. All volunteers traveled in a sea of green "CBIZ Cares" shirts over to the post-service party. The party included a Say Cheese grilled cheese truck, the Mempops food truck, and the Tap Box drink truck.

As Community Involvement Chair, Sadie Williams, audit associate at CBIZ MHM in Memphis, has been in charge of planning this year's Summer Days of Service. The initiative creates different volunteer events throughout the summer for our employees. "I think it's so important to step outside of the world you're in every day. It's easy to forget that you can make a difference right here in your own neighborhood. Through our community involvement events, I hope that people see just how important it is to step into another person's world, even if only for a minute. It's a really humbling experience," Williams said.

In July, 16 CBIZ MHM Memphis employees worked with Metropolitan Inter-Faith Association (MIFA) to deliver Meals on Wheels in Orange Mound. Meals on Wheels is a program that delivers meals to elderly people who are unable to prepare their own or do not have the means to provide for themselves. After the morning spent delivering food, the group stopped at a Memphis favorite, Belly Acres, to reflect on the hard day's work.

In August, CBIZ MHM Memphis teamed up with Girls Inc. of Memphis to assist with their youth farm for a day of hard labor. The Girls Inc. Youth Farm is a plot of land in Frayser where high school girls have the opportunity to learn responsibility and choose what crop they want to grow. The girls must keep up with the process for an entire year to grow the crop they have chosen and be in charge of selling it at different farmers markets around the city. The Memphis office donned sunscreen and hats to set out to help harvest the cherry tomatoes and eggplant during their time at the farm.

Inspired by our friend, Carson Head, the
Memphis office committed the first half of 2015 to raising money for another wish child with a life-threatening medical condition through Make-A-Wish® Mid-South.

At our bi-annual office meeting at the Kroc Center, we granted our wish-child, Sheronda, her wish to go to Disney World. Employees dressed up in Disney character costumes and greeted Sheronda with Disney apparel. Sheronda was taken on a scavenger hunt, collecting clues that eventually led to the big reveal. She and her entire family will be flying to Orlando, FL soon to visit Walt Disney World.

In only five months time, our efforts allowed us to raise enough money to grant Sheronda’s wish. Some activities and internal office events made this goal possible:

Star Program: This program was a special way to recognize someone else in the office whether it was an intern, associate, manager, or managing director. All staff had a chance to buy a “Wish star” for another person’s good job that week in the office or out in the field.

March Madness Brackets: Interested employees participated in a firm-wide bracket during the March Madness games. For each entrant’s contribution to the pool, half of the money donated was put toward our Make-A-Wish funds.

Online Fundraising: Through an online fundraising site set-up for our office, employees, their families, and friends could donate directly to our cause.

Thank you to Make-A-Wish® Mid-South for allowing our office to participate in this wonderful program and congratulations to Wish Volunteer and our team leader, Sherry Hodgson, and the entire community involvement committee for inspiring our office and making this wish possible.
