What does one give a woman that has exceled in both her personal and professional endeavors and become a role model for other businesswomen in Memphis? A pink Super Woman cape of course.

On Friday, September 9th, the Memphis Business Journal hosted the 5th annual Super Women in Business awards luncheon at the University of Memphis Holiday Inn. CBIZ MHM Memphis is proud to have been a sponsor of the awards since their inception.

The nearly 400 attendees in the audience watched as each 2016 Super Woman Award recipient received their pink cape, plaque, and said a few words about the people in their life that inspire them. Each woman was given the task of saying 5 people who inspired them. If they said more than 5, they were asked to donate an article of clothing for each following person named. The clothing was then donated to DeNeuville Learning Center, which provides educational programs and support to adult female students with limited resources.

This year's awards program also included a new aspect to the program: 5 Women to Watch selected by the Memphis Business Journal Editorial Board. The 2016 Women to Watch are:

  • Jen Andrews, Shelby Farms Conservancy Park
  • Elizabeth Cawein, Signal Flow PR
  • Brit Fitzpatrick, MentorMe and Geeked Memphis
  • Tami Sawyer, Teach for America
  • Holly Whitfield, I love Memphis/MCVB

CBIZ MHM Memphis would like to congratulate the 2016 Class of Super Women in Business and the 5 Women to Watch on their incredible achievements in the Memphis professional community.

More than 10,000 women came together across the nation for Bizwomen’s third annual Mentoring Monday event this year.  CBIZ MHM is proud to be a national sponsor.  The Tampa Bay event, hosted by the Tampa Bay Business Journal, took place at Metropolitan Ministries on April 4, 2016.

In Tampa Bay alone, more than 150 women participated in brief 7-minute one-on-one conversations with C-Suite executives of public, private and not for profit organizations in the Tampa Bay area.  To see the full list of mentors, click here.

Dana Burton, Senior Manager, was one of 42 female mentors participating in the event.  Dana provides audit, review, and compilation services.  Dana is also passionate about her involvement with USF.  Since 2007, she has been a Board Member of the USF Accounting Circle, whose mission is to enhance student professional development and promote student and faculty success through opportunities that engage the Tampa Bay Area.  Dana participates in student mock interviews, student mentoring, event coordination for students, alumni and the Tampa Bay business community, and guest speaking to classes.

As a sponsor for this event since its inception, CBIZ MHM’s Linda Lauer welcomed the group sharing the value of women in our workplace.  Linda also noted the national firm’s development of business women through our Women’s Advantage program.

Carolyn Hardy of Chism Hardy Investments and Henderson Worldwide Investments headlined as the keynote. Working among ‘the good old boys’, she quickly realized the importance of using her relationships to her advantage. During her address, Carolyn spoke about how women should utilize their connections and “human collateral” to advance in their business endeavors, noting that “you will never make a sale if you call the receptionist.”

Overall, the group discussion was very empowering.  Many panelists discussed how women in business should lift each other up by partnering with one another rather than competing among the few women already in the room.

Other panelists included Sara Burnett from LeBonheur Children’s Hospital, Stacy McCall of ServicesMaster by Stratos, and Sarah Petschonek of Volunteer Odyssey.

A crowd of 200 gathered for the #BIZWomen event at the Brooks Museum. To read further coverage, view the Memphis Daily News article.

The Memphis office of CBIZ MHM partnered with the Memphis Business Journal for the fourth annual Super Women in Business Pre-Event Party on August 18th.  Linda Lauer, Lead Managing Director & Co-Attest Practice Leader, welcomed the crowd to the event and gave her personal support for the Awards, as well as the recognition it gives to the Mid-South's leading women decision makers. The 2012-2014 classes of honorees were also invited to mingle and network over drinks and hors d'oeurvres.

This year, the event was held at Sissy’s Log Cabin, a fine jeweler new to Memphis. More than 60 professionals enjoyed the luxurious jewelry and watches on display throughout the venue. Sissy’s jewelry experts were also available to provide insight into the quality and craftsmanship of their selection.  To make the event even more fun, this year’s Super Women were able to pick out any jewelry to wear and have their professional portraits taken.
Lauer, Executive Board member for CBIZ Women's Advantage, offered her insight: “It’s always great having a chance to interact with these amazing women at an event like this. This environment allows us to step away from the big awards and have the opportunity to socialize and network in a more personal setting. This is one of my favorite Memphis Business Journal events, and I look forward to hearing from these successful Super Women at the awards luncheon on Friday.”

It was certainly a glamorous night, and 60 of the Mid-South's most influential business women shined. To view this year's list of Super Women in Business click here. If you'd like more information on the CBIZ Women's Advantage, please contact Linda Lauer at llauer@cbiz.com.

The three day event included sessions on 2015 goals, professional and business development, national community outreach, recruitment and retention, marketing initiatives, and practice group updates.

Outside of their group sessions, the women attended an architectural boat tour.

The CBIZ Women's Advantage Group of Phoenix recently participated at the 2015 BizWomen Mentoring Monday event hosted by the Phoenix Business Journal at the Omni Montelucia Resort. Over 200 female business professionals from all around the State attended the event. Attendees were given the chance to spend 7 minutes with their selected mentors to share stories, advice and support. Our very own Zandra O'Keefe was selected as one of this year's mentors where she was able to mentor several women by sharing career advice and creating inroads for job placement. She successfully connected one mentee with one of her clients and they subsequently set up a job interview. Networking at it's finest! Below are a couple of pictures of our booth where we handed out Sprinkles cupcakes to attendees and of Zandra speaking to one of her mentees. The event was a great success and we look forward to future events dedicated to supporting the careers of Valley business women.
