Betty Isler, Tax Managing Director for the Tampa Bay office, published an article, Draw on the Crowd: How Not-for-Profits Can Take Advantage of Crowdfunding, in Nonprofit Information earlier this month.

In this article, Betty provides insight into how not-for-profit organizations can use crowdfunding for a number of organizational functions, from specific projects to broader causes and general support.

As not-for-profit organizations face new opportunities for receiving support from their community, the fastest growing resource comes from crowdfunding platforms. To help maximize the advantages under crowdfunding, Betty discusses five things to consider when determining how to use the crowdfunding tools:

  • Find the Right Fit
  • Be Descriptive and Project Results
  • Keep in Mind Crowdfunding Isn’t the Ultimate Solution
  • Broader Reach Means More Regulations
  • Other Additional Considerations
For questions regarding crowdfunding, please contact Betty Isler at bisler@cbiz.com or 727.572.1400. To view the full Nonprofit Information article, click here.

Josh Finfrock, Director in the Memphis Office, recently contributed to an article covering updates on 2016 Second Quarter Transfer Pricing Developments.

The article discusses the recently released guidance from the Australian Tax Office (ATO), the recent court ruling in favor of Medtronic, and new guidance from the OECD on the implementation of Country-by-Country reporting.

The Medtronic case is worth noting due to the tax the company would have paid had there been an alternate conclusion. Medtronic recently received a favorable ruling from the U.S. Tax Court in its transfer pricing dispute with the IRS. Had they received an unfavorable ruling, Medtronic would have owed nearly $1.4 billion. The issue arose because the IRS argued that Medtronic U.S. should have received higher royalty rates from its Puerto Rico based subsidiary, MPROC. Medtronic argued that the IRS did not adequately consider the importance of product quality in the medical device industry, and that MPROC provided more than just product assembly.

For questions on how these transfer pricing updates may have an impact on your company, please contact Josh Finfrock at jfinfrock@cbiz.com or 901.685.5575. To view the full article on CBIZ's Insights & Resources page, click here.

Tracey McDonald and Craig Gilman represented CBIZ MHM Tampa Bay at the Florida Association of Community Health Centers 2016 Annual Conference earlier this month. More than 140 people were in attendance for the three day conference at the Marriott Harbor Beach Resort in Fort Lauderdale.

FACHC provides resources for federally qualified health centers throughout all of Florida. The organization finds opportunities for centers to increase their efforts to serve the population and provide quality, comprehensive, primary care services to over 1.3 million patients..

One of the biggest challenges facing CHCs and other not-for-profit organizations that receive federal funding is understanding the impact of OMB’s recent publication of the Uniform Grant Guidance.  If policies in these areas haven’t been updated, organization’s federal funding may be at risk.

To learn how the Uniform Grant Guidance will affect your organization, contact Tracey McDonald at 813.316.4051 or Craig Gilman at 727.572.1400.

The Social Committee for the Memphis Office planned a night out for some food, some drinks, some fun, and most importantly... some Billy Currington. On Friday, July 29th, all employees and their guests were invited to the concert, which was part of the Live at the Garden summer concert series.

Luckily, the rain cleared out, and our employees headed to the Memphis Botanic Gardens to prove that neither muddy conditions nor heat could defeat our ability to jam out to some country music.

Currington played all of his fan favorites, but the crowd pleaser seemed to be the cover of Uptown Funk that he performed in true Memphis fashion and had everyone on their feet. Between the barbecue, the music, the company, and the magically pleasant weather, the night was a great success.

Sonya Daniels, Manager at CBIZ MHM Memphis, was featured in a recent article published by AccountingToday about the discussion of sales tax holidays.

When Massachusetts decided to cancel its sales tax holiday this year, many began to believe this will become a trend in the upcoming years.

Daniels explains that a state depends heavily on sales taxes for revenue, and canceling the sales tax holiday is a way to counter budget deficits.

For 2016, 17 states are offering sales tax holidays, including Tennessee. “From the end of July through early September, what they’re running basically is back-to-school,” said Daniels.

Many, like Daniels, wonder how many states will continue with the tax free holidays. “A lot of states are talking about the loss of revenues during that time,” she said. With the ability for consumers to also get the tax exemption online, there’s an even greater loss for the states.

But there is a helpful hint for those trying to navigate the waters. There are often good sales leading up to the tax holidays, and Daniels urges you to keep your eye in the paper during that time.
