7 Tips on Achieving Zero-Tax Estate Planning Through Charitable Giving

Philanthropy has its advantages

How charitable should I be? What will my legacy be? What values can I teach my children and grandchildren? What do I have passion for? These are some of the questions clients start asking themselves in the autumn of their lives.

Estate planning is an intimate yet challenging process. Deciding who to entrust and bequeath your legacy to is among the largest decisions our clients will face in their lives.

Many times clients feel that they've given enough to their children, or that even if they wanted to donate to charity, they don't know the intricacies involved. Regardless of the end result, clients always want to eliminate taxes from the picture and spend their savings as they choose, not as the government does.

Robert Karon is a managing director at CBIZ MHM.

In step five, it is important that a clear definition of the ideal buyer and the type of offer wanted exists. The final step of the Five Steps to Selling Your Business, co-authored by Dave Enick, is about being nimble to act efficiently to move the transaction from the initial offer to close. This step requires conducting sell-side due diligence, keeping the lines of communication open between the buyer and the seller, and being prepared to respond to the questions that arise during the deal process.

Consider the Market and Revisit Your Objectives

It is important to understand current market conditions as the close approaches and adjust for it proactively rather than in drawn out final negotiations.

Conduct Sell-Side Due Diligence

Sell-side diligence by a reputable firm will help speed up the buying process, especially with buyers who are used to seeing diligence reports.

Execute with Precision

Once the ideal buyer has been identified, meet with the team to discuss what they want to see in the letter of intent and what items are critical to the success of the transaction.

Complete the Sale

Planning for the entire sales process, from maximizing the value of the business through the post-deal transition can help execute a business deal that meets objectives.

CBIZ & MHM Memphis partnered with Evans Petree PC on October 19th to host a roundtable discussing the new overtime regulations. The goal was to inform employers on how these changes will affect their business and the way that they choose to operate with their employees.

Co-presenters Ed Rataj of CBIZ Human Capital Services in St. Louis and Chip Cavagnaro of Evans Petree PC led a powerful discussion followed by a question and answer segment to the more than 50 attendees.

Cavagnaro began the presentation by giving a legislative overview of the revisions to the Fair Labor Standards Act. He continued to explain the things that would change based on the new rule and also discussed the exemptions. The legislative overview was followed by a discussion of how the rule would affect a number of specific industries.

Rataj stepped in for the second half of the presentation to help attendees understand the smartest way to implement the new legislation within the workplace. Through statistics and graphs, Rataj was able to show how to analyze alternatives.

On Saturday October 1st, a group of employees from the Memphis office volunteered to help with registration and accounting aspects at the JDRF One Walk, a one mile walk to raise money and awareness for the millions affected by Type 1 Diabetes (T1D). The walk was held at the newly redesigned Shelby Farms Park.

Many of the teams brought tents, chairs, and music to set-up in the center of the field at Shelby Farms Park where most of the excitement took place. One of the crowded favorites was the aerialists that performed after the walk, one of which was diagnosed with T1D at just 2 years old.

Members of #teamcbiz helped to check people in at the registration table and provide a welcoming attitude to many families that have children struggling with Type 1 Diabetes. The Memphis office's own, Vicki Bari, helped to calculate the overall money count for the 2016 JDRF One Walk. This year, the event raised over $460,000!

CBIZ & MHM Memphis is always proud to be a part of community events like this one. It is great to see many different people unite over making the world a better place, especially a place without Type 1 Diabetes.

To learn more about community involvement at CBIZ MHM Memphis, please contact Sadie Williams, the Memphis office Community Involvement Chair, at SJWilliams@cbiz.com.
