The Tampa Bay office of CBIZ MHM participated in Making Strides Against Breast Cancer at Amalie Arena over the weekend.

A number of staff participated in the actual 5k walk for the 4th year in a row, as well as some who virtually completed it by donating online.

Hosted throughout the nation, these walks help the American Cancer Society to continue to accelerate progress in breast cancer research and keep people with breast cancer healthy while we work towards a cure. Over 20,000 walkers participated in this event, raising $613,000 for Making Strides of Hillsborough. This year the Tampa Bay office raised $3,520!

If you’d like to support Making Strides and the American Cancer Society, you can donate by clicking here. Thanks to everyone for their support of this great cause!

You Know We Train. You Know We Tough. Bow Up.

The Memphis Kroc Center’s Challenge Center served as the perfect spot for our bi-annual office meeting.  To kick off the meeting, all of our employees met in the facility’s Grand Hall for a presentation from our Senior Managing Director, Eustis Corrigan, and other committee representatives. Our staff had the opportunity to welcome new employees, congratulate promoted individuals, discuss internal activities, and hear some motivating words.  Also, our Community Involvement had a special announcement.

After ending the meeting portion, it was time to solve some puzzles.  The energetic coaches from the Kroc Center had quite the experience planned.  We separated into eleven teams and focused on creating team names, chants, and an intro video.  Then, we joined together as one large group for some loud, boisterous fun to get everyone ready to go for the team challenge activities.

After shouting chants in the arena, we split into teams for the individual challenges.  We participated in various team building activities that strengthened our abilities to communicate effectively, actively listen, collaborate with diverse minds, and build trust among our peers.  We were able to utilize our critical thinking skills to solve puzzles, strategically maneuver objects, and resolve scenarios in hopes of becoming the winning team.

July's Office Meeting was a memorable experience that provided our staff a unique way to come together for office updates, community involvement, and team building activities.  We thank the Kroc Center staff for providing an energetic atmosphere for stepping out of our comfort zones.

Inspired by our friend, Carson Head, the
Memphis office committed the first half of 2015 to raising money for another wish child with a life-threatening medical condition through Make-A-Wish® Mid-South.

At our bi-annual office meeting at the Kroc Center, we granted our wish-child, Sheronda, her wish to go to Disney World. Employees dressed up in Disney character costumes and greeted Sheronda with Disney apparel. Sheronda was taken on a scavenger hunt, collecting clues that eventually led to the big reveal. She and her entire family will be flying to Orlando, FL soon to visit Walt Disney World.

In only five months time, our efforts allowed us to raise enough money to grant Sheronda’s wish. Some activities and internal office events made this goal possible:

Star Program: This program was a special way to recognize someone else in the office whether it was an intern, associate, manager, or managing director. All staff had a chance to buy a “Wish star” for another person’s good job that week in the office or out in the field.

March Madness Brackets: Interested employees participated in a firm-wide bracket during the March Madness games. For each entrant’s contribution to the pool, half of the money donated was put toward our Make-A-Wish funds.

Online Fundraising: Through an online fundraising site set-up for our office, employees, their families, and friends could donate directly to our cause.

Thank you to Make-A-Wish® Mid-South for allowing our office to participate in this wonderful program and congratulations to Wish Volunteer and our team leader, Sherry Hodgson, and the entire community involvement committee for inspiring our office and making this wish possible.

This past Saturday, thousands of runners, volunteers, and sponsors gathered to fundraise and promote awareness for St. Jude Children's Research Hospital through the St. Jude Marathon, Half-Marathon, and 5K. Members of our CBIZ MHM Memphis office contributed in various ways to the events -- by running in the half-marathon, participating in the relay, and volunteering.

The CBIZ volunteers were stationed at the water and aid station at mile marker 9, handing out Gu along with preparing water and Gatorade to hand out to the passing runners. St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, located in Memphis, is a pediatric hospital focused on research geared towards the treatment, cures, and prevention of children's catastrophic diseases.

While the average daily operating costs for St. Jude is $2 million, families never receive a bill for any of the services offered through St. Jude.  Therefore, fundraising events such as the St. Jude Marathon, along with community involvement and support in these events, are all the more crucial. This year's St. Jude Marathon involved an estimated 20,000 participants and raised over $7.5 to date. To learn more about the St. Jude Marathon, or to donate, click here. CBIZ loved getting to work with other members of the Memphis community towards such a worthwhile cause and wishes the best of luck to the fundraising team in their continuing efforts!  To learn more about St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, click here.

Last week we held a "Think Pink" week in support of  the Susan G. Komen Foundation and in anticipation of the Memphis Race for the Cure. Our office particularly supports our own Karen Cassella, a 4 year survivor, and her team of "Warriors" who walk the race together. We kicked off the week with a breakfast including pink donuts from one of our favorite local donut shops, Gibson's, and ended the week by wearing pink in honor of Karen and her team.

All proceeds we raised help the fight against breast cancer. Seventy-five percent of the money raised through the Race stays in the community to fund local breast cancer education, screening and treatment programs. The remaining twenty-five percent supports groundbreaking breast cancer research. For more information regarding the Susan G. Komen Foundation visit their website.

Last week marked our office's twelfth year participating in the annual Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) Walk to Cure Diabetes. Our employee-run Community Involvement Committee kicked off our participation in the event with treats and a presentation from a local JDRF ambassador a few weeks prior. On Saturday, October 5th, our team split into two groups - walkers and counters. A number of our staff participated in the walk, while others led the accounting and registration tables, making sure all donations were properly counted and sorted. We are fortunate to have sponsored this great event. For more information on the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, click here.

JDRF is the leading global organization funding type 1 diabetes (T1D) research. JDRF’s goal is to progressively remove the impact of T1D from people’s lives until we achieve a world without T1D. JDRF collaborates with a wide spectrum of partners and is the only organization with the scientific resources, regulatory influence, and a working plan to better treat, prevent, and eventually cure T1D.

As part of our annual Summer Days of Service program, CBIZ volunteers headed to the Metropolitan Inter-Faith Association (MIFA) to take part in the Meals on Wheels program.

Before venturing out across town, the group learned more about MIFA's largest program and the help needed to keep it running in the Mid-South.  Meals on Wheels provides hot, nutritious lunches for homebound elderly and seniors at congregate sites each weekday.

Jennifer Watts, a CBIZ volunteer, noted the rewarding experience she had while delivering meals: "I like the Meals on Wheels program because you actually get to interact with the people you are helping. It's nice to see the immediate effects of your work while volunteering with MIFA."

Earlier this summer, we kicked off Summer Days of Service at the Mid-South Food Bank where CBIZ volunteers sorted donated food.  More information about MIFA can be found on their website: www.mifa.org/.

A group from the Memphis office of CBIZ MHM kicked off our annual Summer Days of Service program at the Mid-South Food Bank this year. Participants inspected and sorted donated food in the agency shopping area for the organization.

As part of their main food distribution program, this warehouse supplies over 80% of the food the Mid-South Food Bank distributes. In 2013, volunteers saved the Food Bank $1,106,038.

Further information about the Mid-South Food Bank can be found on their website.

The Memphis office will participate in several service days throughout the summer, and all are organized by our employee-run Community Involvement Committee. The next volunteer opportunity for employees will be June 20th at MIFA to help with the organization's Meals on Wheels program.

The Memphis office of CBIZ MHM is proud to recognize Karen Cassella for her completion of the Susan G. Komen (SGK) 3-Day, a 60-mile walk throughout the course of three days, in the effort to fight against breast cancer.

The walk was held in San Diego, CA, November 15-17, with walkers supporting the continued theme, “We Will Never Give Up.” Karen celebrates her 3-year anniversary as a breast cancer survivor, and completed the 60-mile walk for the third time with her husband, Nick Cassella. With the help of friends and family, Karen surpassed her goal of raising $5,000. Half of her donations came from her CBIZ friends/colleagues through our local 'Think Pink' week as well as online donations. Together, Karen and Nick were able to raise $9,000 in combined donations for her team.

Karen's first 3-Day walk took place in July 2011, just six months after she completed her chemo treatments, at the Boston 3-Day. As a result, Karen started a Bucket List and added ‘Participate in the SGK 60-mile walk every year’ as its first item. Her time spent at the 3-Day walk was an amazing experience. Karen hopes to remind others that every 74 seconds, somewhere in the world, someone dies from breast cancer. The San Diego 3-Day Walk net proceeds are invested in breast cancer research and community programs.

As discussed in our last post, our local office has decided to take the national food drive theme, "Heroes Against Hunger," and incorporate a Memphis twist, using Elvis as our hero.

"Ladies & Gentleman, Hunger Has Left the Building," has taken on a life of its own at CBIZ MHM.

Last week, three of our employees dressed up as the Elvis trio, taking pictures with those who had donated money to our collection for the Mid-South Food Bank. The three posed in front of our creative display - a handmade stage, complete with LED lighting, made by one of our own staff members. The office held a "jeans day" on Friday and employees enjoyed a bake sale this week, another fundraising event for our food drive.

We are looking forward to our final event of our local food drive, Pie-A-Partner, which will be a chance for employees to throw a pie at their Managing Director of choice!
