Last week we held a "Think Pink" week in support of  the Susan G. Komen Foundation and in anticipation of the Memphis Race for the Cure. Our office particularly supports our own Karen Cassella, a 4 year survivor, and her team of "Warriors" who walk the race together. We kicked off the week with a breakfast including pink donuts from one of our favorite local donut shops, Gibson's, and ended the week by wearing pink in honor of Karen and her team.

Think Pink Week 2014 KKs Warriors 2

All proceeds we raised help the fight against breast cancer. Seventy-five percent of the money raised through the Race stays in the community to fund local breast cancer education, screening and treatment programs. The remaining twenty-five percent supports groundbreaking breast cancer research. For more information regarding the Susan G. Komen Foundation visit their website.

The Tangible Property Regulations are the most dramatic changes in tax law to affect businesses since the overhaul of the Internal Revenue Code in 1986. The IRS has recently finalized procedures for how to implement these extensive changes, some of which are tax-payer friendly and available for a limited time only.

Eustis Corrigan covers some of the recent updates associated with these regulations. Learn more about important guidance that can help you when it comes to your year-end tax planning and preparations in the latest CBIZ BizTip video:

Our upcoming CFO & Controller Conference will feature various speakers and presentations on the topic of enterprise-wide risk management (ERM). Risk is an inevitable part of an operating environment. In today's world, risk management can't be seen as a simple matter of insurance protection.

The CFO and Controller must be focused on planning, leading, and controlling the activities of an organization in order to minimize the effects of risk on an organization's capital and earnings. Join us at the FedEx Institute of Technology at the University of Memphis on November 11, 2014 to hear risk experts cover the following:

Last week marked our office's twelfth year participating in the annual Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) Walk to Cure Diabetes. Our employee-run Community Involvement Committee kicked off our participation in the event with treats and a presentation from a local JDRF ambassador a few weeks prior. On Saturday, October 5th, our team split into two groups - walkers and counters. A number of our staff participated in the walk, while others led the accounting and registration tables, making sure all donations were properly counted and sorted. We are fortunate to have sponsored this great event. For more information on the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, click here.

JDRF is the leading global organization funding type 1 diabetes (T1D) research. JDRF’s goal is to progressively remove the impact of T1D from people’s lives until we achieve a world without T1D. JDRF collaborates with a wide spectrum of partners and is the only organization with the scientific resources, regulatory influence, and a working plan to better treat, prevent, and eventually cure T1D.

Our local office of CBIZ MHM has been awarded by the When Work Works National Partners, Families and Work Institute (FWI) and The Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) as a winner of the 2014 When Work Works Award, formerly known as the Alfred P. Sloan Award for Excellence in Workplace Effectiveness and Flexibility.

The When Work Works team has identified us as a "leading employer of choice by demonstrating success in using flexibility as part of an effective workplace strategy to achieve business goals and benefit employees by helping them meet their responsibilities on and off the job."

"Locally, we could not be any prouder to receive this award because it asks current employees for their input during the selection process. We are grateful to those who participated in the survey, and we hope to continue this culture of flexibility in an industry known for its deadline-driven long hours," notes Moira House, HR Director.

The selection process for this award involved an evaluation of our programs and practices and a confidential employee survey. We now rank in the top 20% of employers nationally in terms of our programs, policies and culture for creating an effective and flexible workplace.

This year's Super Women in Business Awards hosted by the Memphis Business Journal  looked a little bit different from years past. Each of the 25 finalists were honored with a plaque and a pink cape as they were recognized as some of the Mid-South's most influential women in business. As a sponsor of the awards since its inception in 2012, we are proud to spotlight women playing a role in the success of their businesses and helping make the Memphis community a success through their involvement.

Ann Langston

The awards luncheon was held at Hilton Memphis on Friday, August 29th. With 450 people in attendance, the crowd was energized as each Super Woman took the stage to share with the audience three words that described their idea of a "Super Woman," their award dedication, or their commitment to the city of Memphis. Though each woman's words were thoughtfully crafted, many chose to say more than three words, and in doing so, made a donation of $10 for each word over three to the Dress for Success Memphis program. Perhaps the most memorable selection came from Ann Langston of Church Health Center (pictured right) who clarified that "Super Women bring their own capes," as she donned one of her own.

Prior to the awards luncheon, we hosted a Super Women in Business Pre-Event to celebrate past and present Super Women in Business. The 60 attendees included 2012, 2013, and 2014 classes of honorees. All were invited to mingle and network over drinks and hors d'oeurvres.  Linda Lauer, Executive Board member of National CBIZ Women's Advantage, offered a toast and spoke on the importance of having an internal support system of women professionals, as well as an external network of highly skilled, seasoned, professional women. This year the event was held at Mednikow Jewelers, a multi-generational Memphis storefront. With so many jewels available, the ladies couldn't help but try-on some of the selection. Food and bar service was provided by Parties In A Pinch catering, and a giftcard giveaway was given courtesy of Etcetera clothing.
