After a long busy season—with open enrollment, compliance reporting, year-end and year-begin audits and everything else HR must complete—we often see the summer as reprieve. It’s pretty outside, employees are on vacations and HR is focused on the summer picnic planning. However, now should be the time to really kick it into high gear! Of course, “high gear” meaning high-level!
Often, HR gets so bogged down with the paperwork and checklists that we don’t make time for the strategy and human capital development. Summer is the season to make that time! To start, think about some core strategic initiatives important to every business and your status in each. Consider:
- Do you have a successful training program in place? Think not only about the HR courses like anti-harassment, ethics and HIPAA, but also about manager-in-training programs, career development, conflict resolution and team building.
- When was the last time your employee handbook was reviewed? The laws have been changing and your handbook may not have. Just this year alone, we had changes to employment policies like medical marijuana, FMLA and protected classes of employees.
- Is there an up-to-date succession plan in place? Sadly, some large corporations have seen some unfortunate changes in leadership over the last month. While mourning the loss of influential leaders, these corporations have a responsibility to protect the rest of their employees’ livelihood and ensure that the business stays sound. Without a succession plan, your business could be in jeopardy.
By taking the time to work on some strategic initiatives, you will be proving the ROI for the entire HR function and also improving your career as a strategic thinker and valuable business contributor.
