With the end of the holiday shopping season, coupled with inclement weather hitting a large portion of the nation, a hiring decline in the CBIZ Small Business Employment Index (SBEI) was expected. Wrapping up 2013, the CBIZ Small Business Employment Index (SBEI) for December showed a slight increase in hiring -- a .31 percent boost for the month. This continues the modest increase the index reported in November. Wednesday’s ADP December survey provided positive numbers, releasing data on the 238,000 jobs added during the month.

Our July Small Business Employment Index (SBEI) has been released and the findings show a slight decrease of .57 percent during the month, following a similar downward movement of .21 percent in small business hiring in June. In contrast, ADP’s July jobs survey illustrated that the private sector added more workers than initially anticipated with a total of 200,000 jobs, topping analysts’ estimates of 180,000 jobs.

July 3, 2013
Our June Small Business Employment Index (SBEI) has been released and results show that despite a hiring increase in May, there was a .21 percent decline in hiring last month. The June index does not fully indicate a change in the direction of small business hiring, however -- the number of companies reporting a positive change exceeded those reporting a negative change.

June 6, 2013
Our May Small Business Employment Index (SBEI) has been released and the findings show a significant increase of 1.91 percent during the month, following a slight increase of .43 percent in small business hiring in April. In an interesting contrast, ADP’s May jobs survey illustrated that the private sector added just 135,000 jobs, well below analysts’ estimates of 167,000 jobs.
