Increasing by 1.25 percent in April, the CBIZ Small Business Employment Index (SBEI) reported a consecutive hiring increase -- the index also showed growth in March. Furthermore, for the month of April, the 2014 SBEI results are the most vigorous since April 2011.

After two months of declines, the CBIZ Small Business Employment Index (SBEI) entered positive territory, increasing by 1.01 percent during March. Historically for the SBEI, the month of March has reported hiring increases. With staffing declines in January and February, we looked to the uncertainty surrounding areas like the Affordable Care Act as something that could be impacting small business hiring.

For the second consecutive month, the CBIZ Small Business Employment Index (SBEI) reported a hiring decrease (-.40 percent) in February. This slight dip in employment matches up with lower-than-expected results from ADP, which reported that 139,000 employees were added in the private sector while economists initially called for 158,000 new jobs to be created in February.

Wrapping up 2013, the CBIZ Small Business Employment Index (SBEI) for December showed a slight increase in hiring -- a .31 percent boost for the month. This continues the modest increase the index reported in November. Wednesday’s ADP December survey provided positive numbers, releasing data on the 238,000 jobs added during the month.

Reporting a .52 percent hiring increase during November, the CBIZ Small Business Employment Index (SBEI) saw a slight boost due to this year’s holiday season. Even though nearly half (54 percent) of companies surveyed did not change staffing last month, 24.

The CBIZ Small Business Employment Index (SBEI) reported a .42 percent decrease in hiring for October. Even though there was a decline, the index showed that the amount of companies boosting headcounts was a bit higher than those showing decreases. With hiring in the small business sector slightly down, we can look to delayed seasonal hiring as a factor.

While the CBIZ Small Business Employment Index (SBEI) returned to positive territory in August, the index reported a 2.15 percent decline in employment for September. This is not overly alarming, however, given that there has been a drop in September hiring levels for the past four years.

Returning to positive territory for the first time since May, the CBIZ Small Business Employment Index (SBEI) reported a hiring increase for the month of August. Up 1.23 percent, the SBEI sheds positive light on small business hiring. However, it is evident that the majority of filled positions that created this hiring increase were part-time.
