Last week, the CBIZ July Small Business Employment Index for July was featured in prominent media outlets, including The Wall Street Journal, Crain's Cleveland Business, and Bloomberg Businessweek, as the SBEI continues to grow to be an essential part of the country's employment discussion.

Our July Small Business Employment Index (SBEI) has been released and the findings show a slight decrease of .57 percent during the month, following a similar downward movement of .21 percent in small business hiring in June. In contrast, ADP’s July jobs survey illustrated that the private sector added more workers than initially anticipated with a total of 200,000 jobs, topping analysts’ estimates of 180,000 jobs.

As is widely known by now, the Affordable Care Act’s employer shared responsibility penalty has been delayed until 2015. This notwithstanding, there is much to be done to prepare. In that spirit, let’s look at what will be required in 2015.First, it’s necessary to understand shared responsibility risk and how many full-time employees are offered minimum essential coverage at an affordable rate.

Is resume fraud a thing of the past? Unfortunately, the answer is no. In fact, I feel as though resume fraud is more rampant today than ever before. Our executive search firm routinely evaluates candidates to be placed at senior levels within organizations at Fortune 50 conglomerates, private equity-backed companies, nonprofit organizations, and many others, and validity of resumes is paramount.

Our June Small Business Employment Index (SBEI) has been released and results show that despite a hiring increase in May, there was a .21 percent decline in hiring last month. The June index does not fully indicate a change in the direction of small business hiring, however -- the number of companies reporting a positive change exceeded those reporting a negative change.

Our May Small Business Employment Index (SBEI) has been released and the findings show a significant increase of 1.91 percent during the month, following a slight increase of .43 percent in small business hiring in April. In an interesting contrast, ADP’s May jobs survey illustrated that the private sector added just 135,000 jobs, well below analysts’ estimates of 167,000 jobs.
