Reminder: Form M-1 Filing for MEWAs Due by March 1st (Article)

If you sponsored a multiple employer welfare arrangement (MEWA) in 2014, make certain that you file the Form M-1 annual report by March 1, 2015.  The 2014 Form M-1 version of the form has been updated with only minor clarifications and without any substantive changes from the 2013 form.  The Form M-1 can only be submitted electronically through the DOL’s Online Filing System (http://www.askebsa.dol.gov/mewa).

As a reminder, all welfare benefit plans required to file a Form M-1 are required to file the Form 5500 regardless of the plan size or type of funding.

In addition, MEWAs are subject to increased reporting and disclosure requirements relating to its financial condition and prior to beginning operations (see CBIZ Health Reform Bulletin, Final Rules Relating to Multiple Employer Welfare Arrangements and Form M-1, 3/8/13).
